Music, Swords and Magic...

Movie preview! (in Dutch but the video is cool)

About two years ago, I joined a group of medieval sword fighting and reenactment named de Orde de Noorderwind (The order of the Northern Wind). I'll give you some news of my activities with this group on this pages and I'll try to post from time to time pictures, videos etc...

Medieval Sword Fighting

I've always been used to see swords hanging around in my living-room. My father is a fencing teacher and so was his father before him. I've actually been fencing for about 15 years (never been very good though ^^)! If you also factor the fact that I'm Fantasy fan since teenage, there's not reason to be surprised that I joined a group of sword fighting. However, the truth is that the way I met Youval first and then the other members of the Noorderwind is a pretty nice succession of coincidences. He happened to be the only other french speaker in a group of people I met for the first time after being invited by someone I barely knew at the time. Many of the people I met that day are good friends now and this meeting led me to hear about a group of people who fought in a park every Sunday with wooden swords. Curiosity may kill the cat but also feeds destiny...

I don't think it's really my role to tell the story of the group so I will suggest you to visit the website of the noorderwind...and to buy the 'learning dutch in 3 month' method until the site is translated into english. ^^ Anyway, the most important things to know is that with a lot of efforts and time, the small group of friends who naively used to fight in a park started to take things more and more seriously. We had the opportunity to make a short movie at some point and this strengthened the group. Then, we were offered to prepare a show for Castlefest in 2006 and things kept going... For a long time, I've been more of a spectator of all this than a fully active member but I now try to be more invested and I took part in my first shows earlier this year... and that's a cool feeling. It kind of compensates for the fact that, as a musician, I haven't stepped on a stage for 4 or 5 years now.

Now, I'll let you have a look at the following videos to give you a small taste of what we do.

The video on the left was our short show at the Gameplay 2007 (Utrecht) for the promotion of Ubisoft's 'Assassin's Creed' and the video on the right and the video on the right is our very first movie named Dimite Nobis (2005)

Since the Noorderwind aren't only about fighting each other with heavy blades, the clothing is an important part of our activities. Due to my lack of spare time, I'm actually one of poorly dressed member of the group but I'm currently working on new pieces of equipment. However, here is a small gallery of my various cloth, weapons and stuff...

Let's go through my equipment from bottom to top. So, here are my leather boots and braies:

I bought the boots but the other parts are home made (thanks again Shanna for your help by the way).

I also made a linen under tunic and a tunic. Actually, those are pretty comfortable and warm. The third picture is a coat of arm with the star of the noorderwind.

Let's finish this quick tour with my two swords and one of my helmets.

I'll add some more pictures and maybe a more detailed description of my costume in the future. The picture below shows how far it got as of today (July 2009) with gambeson, chain mail etc...

One of the most important activities of the Noorderwind is the different shows we prepare all year long and present during festivals. I suggest you to have a look at the following page where you can download a few videos. We essentially prepare one big show per year that we present on various occasions along the year (see list below). We also made a movie named 'Dimitte Nobis' which brings us back to the very beginning of the group. Our costumes were finished in a hurry and our fights are far from impressive. On the top of that, nobody understands the plot... However, I think everyone of us loves this movie because it showed us that we could achieve things together and it was the first real chapter of the story we currently write. We also, from time to time perfom shorter shows for various occasions such as a video game event (Gameplay) for the promotion of the game 'Assassin's Creed'.

Find here two videos of performances from the Gameplay (2007) and the Goth & Fantasy Fair (2006). Hopefully, some more videos are to come...

For the record and so that anyone interested can be aware of the next coming performance, here is a list of the past and future events we will take part of (the performance in red is our next one):

I definitely will add some more content on this page such as some videos and galleries of pictures as well as a bit more text about the group but I didn't want to wait any longer to have a Sword fighting section on my website even if it's yet somewhat incomplete. ^^ So, as usual, feel free to ask if you have questions, comments or suggestions and if you would like me to develop one particular aspect of the activities of the group on this page.
