Marseille

Vieux Port

I never went to Marseille before just a week ago… Everyone told me it was a beautiful city but just lacked the occasion. SHAME ON ME! Marseille trully is a beautiful city and I’m glad I finally got the chance to spend some time there!
A week ago, I had to go the Nice for a conference and I already know the town a little so I wanted to see something else and I booked myself a night in an hotel in Marseille before flying back. I couldn’t stay much longer than 2 days there but just look at the following picture. That’s the view you have from the train station when you exit the building. That’s what I call a nice welcome!

Marseille

True enough, I suck at taking pictures! But you can still get the idea of how beautiful it is with N-D de la Garde, the former cathedral, in the background and a couple of statues on the square in front of the station. With my limited time, I decided to have a tour of the City with a touristic bus. Let me thank Virak for this suggestion by the way. That’s actually a nice way to have an overview of the overall city (the second largest in France after all). I would lie if I pretend that I remember the whole story of Marseille but it’s definitely a place slowly crafted by a long history. The landscape along the coast is great (although I still prefere the cliffs of the Britany’s wild coast ^^) and I could just take a few pics here and there but I definitely plan to come back some day. I have to see N-D de la Garde from closer and I want to wander around the coast.

I will add that people were really nice and welcoming and I will always remember how many times I’ve been told I was unlucky to come with such a bad wether: about 12 degrees and a cloudy sky… Well, don’t worry people from Marseille, I can bear this kind of climatic chalenge ! When I came back to Utrecht, it snowed and the canals were freezing again… everything’s relative! I’ll just try to forget the stress of missing my plane on Sunday evening but the rest of my trip went great. I also greet the friends I met at the conference: Olivier, Briva, Melanie and everyone, it was nice seeing you there!

NB: The three pictures above are a church partially destroyed with a large statue of the Christ. I have no idea about the story of that place but I’m interested if any of you knows it. The second picture is the actual cathedral of Marseille and is a pretty massive building but the guide said that N-D de la Garde (last pic) remains the most popular building of the city and I can understand why!

PS: On a side note, just following my previous post, my teeth are fine now and, hopefully, I won’t talking about dentist filling or root canal in the near future…

Thank you, it made me curious. It’s located close to the ‘hotel dieu’ if I’m not mistaken.

Well, my friend told me the answer. So, they are the ruins of one of the most ancient churches of Marseille, called “Clocher des accoules”. You can find more informations about it by visiting these sites :

Thank you Lulla. That’s indeed that church!
By the way, I installed a new spam filter and it looks a bit too strict so it actually thought your message was a spam because of the 4 links I guess. Luckily, I checked and restored it but I’m sorry for that and I hope nobody lost a comment!

Anyway, go and watch the ‘Clocher des accoules’ if you get the chance and also have a look at the Hotel Dieu which is nearby!

My god, I really liked Marseille, I have to go back! :p
